What Is Scalp Micropigmentation? (SMP)

Scalp micropigmentation, also known as a hair tattoo, involves applying a specialised pigment onto the scalp with a microneedle to mimic the appearance of natural hair follicles. It is non-surgical and non-invasive, with no incisions or extractions. When performed by an experienced SMP artist, the result complements your skin tone and any remaining hair, creating the impression of a closely shaved head of hair or of greater density through thinning areas.

No. The equipment, needles, pigments and technique are all designed specifically for the scalp. Body tattoo ink is deposited deeper and can shift in colour over time, whereas SMP pigment is placed more superficially in tiny dots and formulated to soften gradually rather than discolour. The goal is also different: a tattoo artist draws an image, while an SMP artist replicates thousands of individual follicles at the correct depth, angle and shade.

Your artist builds the result from thousands of tiny pigment deposits, each placed to match the size, spacing and randomness of your own follicles. Shade, depth and density are varied across the scalp so the pattern never looks uniform or drawn on. Early sessions establish the base density, and later sessions refine detail, depth of colour and the softness of the hairline until the work blends with your existing hair.

SMP suits a wide range of hair loss, from a receding hairline or thinning crown through to complete baldness. It is also used to camouflage scalp scarring and to add the appearance of density where hair has thinned. Most clients need between two and four sessions, usually spaced around 7 to 14 days apart so the scalp can heal and the pigment can settle between visits. The first sessions build the base density and the later ones add definition and refinement. Your artist will confirm the likely number at your consultation, and if a fourth session is needed you will be told before you start rather than partway through.

Sessions typically run between one and three hours, depending on how much of the scalp is being treated and how detailed the work is. Breaks are taken whenever you want one. There is no meaningful downtime afterwards: expect some redness across the treated area for a day or so, and you can generally return to normal activities straight away, following simple aftercare instructions.

Most people describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful. Because the work is thousands of tiny dots rather than heavy lines or shading, it is generally reported as less intense than a conventional body tattoo. Sensation varies across the scalp, and clients often find bonier areas near the hairline and temples sharper than the crown. Breaks are taken as often as you need throughout the session.

SMP is long-lasting rather than permanent. Results hold for years, then gradually soften as the pigment fades, so most clients consider a maintenance touch-up every few years to restore depth and definition. That gradual fade is actually an advantage: it lets the work be adapted as your hair loss pattern changes or as your hair greys, keeping the result consistent with how you look now.

Recovery is straightforward. The treated area is usually pink or slightly red for a day or two and can feel a little dry or tight as it settles. Aftercare is simple: keep the scalp dry for the first few days, avoid heavy sweating and harsh products, and apply the moisturiser we recommend once healing is underway. Most clients feel completely settled within about a week.

Yes, it can be adjusted. Because the pigment softens over time, the hairline can be lowered, the density increased or the shade rebalanced at a later session as your preferences or hair loss change. Removal is a separate process handled by laser clinics and is rarely needed, but the option exists. We would rather get the design right the first time, which is why hairline placement is agreed with you before any pigment is applied.
