A hair tattoo is scalp micropigmentation: a cosmetic tattoo technique that uses specialised needles to place small dots of pigment on the scalp, replicating the look of natural hair follicles. It is non-invasive and non-surgical. For men it is most often used to restore a receding hairline, create the appearance of a closely shaved head, add density to thinning areas, or camouflage scarring from previous procedures.

Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons men come to us. Across a fully bald scalp the artist builds an even follicle pattern from the hairline back through the crown, giving the appearance of a head of hair shaved down to the skin. Because there is no existing hair to blend with, the shade and the hairline design carry the whole result, so consistency of technique across the scalp matters enormously.

It can restore the appearance of one. Pigment is placed to rebuild the frontal line and fill the recession at the temples, softened at the very front so it reads as natural stubble rather than a hard edge. The new line is designed around your face shape and age, and we would generally advise against dropping it to where it sat in your twenties, as an age-appropriate hairline is far more convincing.

Not necessarily. Male pattern baldness often starts early, and plenty of our clients begin in their twenties after years of products that did not deliver. The consideration at a younger age is that your hair loss will likely continue, so the design needs to anticipate that rather than fix a look in place. Your artist will talk through hairline placement and how the work can be adapted later as the pattern develops.

Not always. If you want the closely shaved look, keeping the hair very short lets the pigment and stubble blend seamlessly, and most men with advanced loss choose this. If you still have coverage on top, SMP can instead be worked between existing hairs to reduce the contrast between scalp and hair and create the look of greater density, with no shaving required. Your artist will recommend the approach that suits your pattern.

Before any pigment is applied, your artist maps the proposed hairline on your scalp and reviews it with you in the mirror, adjusting height, shape and the degree of recession at the temples until you are happy. The design accounts for your face shape, age, natural hair growth pattern and how you want to wear it. Nothing starts until you have agreed the line, and a free digital simulation can be prepared beforehand.

Sensation varies across the head. Men most often report the frontal hairline, temples and any area over bone as sharper, while the crown and the mid-scalp tend to feel duller. Scar tissue can feel different again. None of it is generally described as unbearable, and because the work is thousands of tiny dots rather than solid shading, most clients rate it below a conventional body tattoo. Breaks are taken whenever you ask.

Most men return to work the next day, and often the same day. Expect some redness across the treated area for around 24 to 48 hours. We ask you to avoid heavy sweating, swimming pools, saunas and direct sun for a few days after each session so the pigment can settle cleanly, then normal training resumes. Full aftercare instructions are given at the studio and there is no extended downtime.

They solve different problems. A transplant is surgical, moves your own follicles and takes many months to show a result, with the outcome limited by your donor supply. A hair tattoo is non-surgical, gives a visible result on the day and does not depend on donor hair, but it creates the appearance of hair rather than growing it. Many men combine the two, using SMP to add apparent density and disguise donor-area scarring.

That is expected, and SMP adapts to it. As more hair is lost the treated pattern can be extended and blended into the newly exposed areas at a later session, keeping the overall look consistent. This is one of the practical advantages over solutions that must be maintained daily. Your artist will discuss the likely progression of your pattern at consultation so the initial design leaves room for it.

No. The pigment is deposited in the skin between existing hairs, not into the follicles themselves, so it does not affect how your remaining hair grows. SMP does not stop hair loss either, it does not accelerate it. If you are taking medication to slow your hair loss you can continue alongside SMP; mention it at consultation so your artist can plan the density with your likely future coverage in mind.
